E-Mail ports in your mail client or on your cell phone.

We take a look at the commonly used ports:

POP / POP3

The Post Office Protocol retrieves all e-mail from the mail server.

  • Port 110: This is the default port for a POP connection. This connection is not encrypted and thus can also be considered insecure.
  • Port 995: This is the port for an encrypted POP connection. This is a secure connection, so we recommend using it.

IMAP

The Internet Message Access Protocol synchronizes all e-mail with the mail server.

  • Port 143: The default port without an encrypted connection. It is also not recommended to use this port.
  • Port 993: This port is suitable for an encrypted IMAP connection. This is secure and also recommended to use.

SMTP

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is intended for sending e-mail.

  • Port 25: This refers to the default port for SMTP, this port is unsecured and therefore not encrypted.
  • Port 465: This port is suitable for a secure SSL connection and is therefore encrypted.
  • Port 587: This port is suitable for a secure TLS connection. This is another variant of encryption.
